Game Review: Natalie Gulbis Golf Game
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com
Winnipeg, Manitoba entrepreneur Daryl Harris, founder of GWAG Golf, is a huge golf fan. He’s also a big supporter of LPGA Tour star, Natalie Gulbis. So, when Harris put his creative mind to work, he twinned his interests in creating, the Natalie Gulbis Golf Game.
Unlike most of today’s golf games, which rely more on gigabytes than they do old-fashioned fun, the Natalie Gulbis Golf Game pairs a special deck of cards – bearing Gulbis’s image – with actual on-course play. But as Harris points out, the game was carefully designed to not distract golfers from the technical aspect of their games. And, the game does not burden players with having to keep score of any side game in which they are engaged.
Many of you have played for a Nassau, or a Wolf. The Natalie Gulbis Golf Game adds another twist to the game of golf with its “golf within a game.” There are 16 golf cards, each with a different colour photo of Gulbis, and each offering a golf tip or favourite golf quote from the LPGA Tour winner. Each card represents the outcome of a certain type of golf shot. The goal of this game is to hold onto the positive cards, while passing on the negative cards to other players.
There are four point cards – one for each golfer in your foursome – plus a rules card. After the round starts, a designated captain hands out the card to a player whenever a corresponding shot is made to those on the point card. Only one card is given or exchanged per shot, and the card is chosen by the shooter. For example, hit a tree and lost ball: only one card is selected. Cards are exchanged between players whenever a shot is duplicated. The last player to make the shot will receive the card. And at the end of the round, players tally all of their plus and minus points from the cards they hold.
According to Harris, the fun is in the exchange of cards and the bantering that accompanies it. And what foursome doesn’t enjoy some give and take during a round of golf?
Kudos to Harris for adding a new twist – and with Gulbis’s image, no less – to the game of golf. I was impressed with the quality of the cards, too. Harris has obviously put a lot of effort into this game.
