Equipment Review:
Tour Edge Exotics XCG-V Tour Spec Fairway Wood
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com
Every now and again, a piece of golf equipment crosses our desk and excites us more than a Tiger Woods fist pump. The Tour Edge Exotics XCG-V Tour Spec fairway wood is one such piece of golf gear.
As a low-handicap golfer, I know that when a piece of equipment feels comfortable in my hands the moment I grip it, then it’s probably going to perform for my specific game. The Tour Edge Exotics XCG-V Tour Spec 3-wood did not disappoint. Hands down, it is one of the best fairway metals I have tested over the past five years. No surprise, the Exotics line is a multiple award winner. Here’s why – and here’s what makes the XCG-V Tour Spec club tick.
The XCG-V Tour Spec fairway wood boasts engineering excellence. From the outset, Tour Edge engineers focused on reducing weight and optimizing weight distribution to create what the company says is the longest-hitting, best-feeling fairway wood in golf. To achieve these results, the Tour Spec features a purpose-built titanium cup face, an ultra-light magnesium crown, and a heavy, high-density steel sole plate - a unique combination in club design. The magnesium crown and titanium cup face allow more of the club head's weight to rest in the heavy steel sole. In fact, the Tour Spec's smaller pear-shaped head design, taller face, and perfectly executed weight distribution move the CG location closer to the face for a more penetrating ball flight and tour-preferred trajectory.
The turbo-charged face benefits from the inherent power and feel that accompany the titanium cup face and skirt. Lower spin rates and a more penetrating ball flight are the result of the Tour Spec's deeper titanium face. Optimizing consistency, the larger, deeper cup face creates an enormous hot zone for more explosive power even on off-center hits.
The heavy, high-density steel sole plate and its unique v-shape shift more weight to the heel and toe. This creates a deeper CG angle and CG point that help the club face square at impact with more force for a quick launch and longer, hotter, more accurate shots.
The Tour Edge Exotics XCG-V Tour Spec 15° 3-wood accompanied me to the range where I tested it for the watching eyes of another local teaching pro. Without exaggeration, we both stood with our mouths wide open as this baby produced a soft-sounding soft-feeling, crazy-long low- to mid-flight ball time after time. I tested the Exotics XCG-V Tour Spec fairway wood with Graphite Design Tour AD 65 g shaft. What a combo. I was pleasantly surprised by the length, accuracy and ball flight of this club – one of the best to cross our desk here at LondonOntarioGolf.com.
