Accessory Review: SuperStroke Putter Grip
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, London Ontario Golf
There are a myriad of putters available to golfers, but there’s one method which is universal to dropping putts on a consistent basis: keeping your hands out of the swing.
Here’s a new putter grip which aims to do just that – promote a consistently good putting stroke by removing wrist action: the SuperStroke Putter Grip.
Before you go thinking that this product is a fringe item, here are a few facts which will change your mind. KJ Choi recently won the Sony Open using this grip, and it has earned recognition as “Best New Product of the Year” at the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando.
Choi said, “(SuperStroke) helps me to have my arms closely fit to my body, and it takes the wrist action out so every putt feels more comfortable.”
At 1.67 in. in diameter, the SuperStroke Putter Grip is a giant amongst grips, but its science makes perfect sense. Despite being twice the size of a conventional grip, the SuperStroke grip fills the hands so the tendency to squeeze too tightly is greatly reduced. As well, the virtually taper-free design promotes even pressure in both hands, helping to maintain a square putter face.
The SuperStroke Putter Grip can be installed on any standard shaft putter, and it’s easy to install. After removing the existing grip, and experimenting with putter length and flat side position, install the spacer rod. Then, square up the putter face before fully tightening all screws, and applying SuperStroke glue. Just follow the included directions – it’s a snap.
The SuperStroke Putter Grip conforms to USGA and R&A rules and regulations, and installs in about 15 minutes.
The real test: how does it feel when putting? Surprisingly, the SuperStroke Putter Grip does not feel like it is too much outside the box. It really does relax your hands while helping to square the putter face.
Choi said during Sony Open week, reduced hand pressure via the SuperStroke Putter Grip helped prevent pulled or pushed putts. “This week, there were no right side or left side misses,” Choi said.
SuperStroke grips are available in the new ProLine Series, which features bold new designs and colours, plus a new surface material, in addition to the original Classic Series (now available in red, blue and charcoal grey).
The SuperStroke Putter Grip carries a MSRP of $44 US. For more information visit the company web site, www.superstrokegrip.com.
