Apparel Review:
Sun Mountain RainFlex Outwear
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com

How fitting is this? While watching the Open Champion from a wet, blustery Royal Birkdale Golf Club, the folks at Sun Mountain Sports forwarded a sample of the RainFlex outerwear – some of the best wind-resistant, waterproof gear to cross our desks.

Forget the fact it was 35° C in the shade here in southwestern Ontario: we just had to try on the sharp-looking ensemble from one of golf’s leading innovative thinkers. Sun Mountain didn’t disappoint. The RainFlex wear not only looks great and performs in the nastiest of conditions: it also feels great – a big change from the bulky pants and jackets of old.

Sun Mountain is well known for its line of golf bags, golf carts and accessories, but it says here the RainFlex gear ranks amongst the tops in the industry. Here’s why.

Both the pant and short-sleeve pullover we tested feature Rain Shield fabric protector. It repels water and stains, maintains breathability while controlling wet-out, and increases the life of the garment. RainFlex garments are produced through a knitting process, which allows incredible stretch where it is needed in a golf garment. It stretches 100% across the shoulder, 30% top to bottom and 100% in four directions of bias. Woven nylon garments have almost zero stretch.

Sun Mountain says RainFlex is “the most breathable, truly waterproof garment we’ve ever worn.” Independent lab testing shows a vapour transmission rate seven times the minimum requirement. RainFlex garments are also extremely lightweight and form-fitting, reducing unnecessary drape, but are also entirely stretchable and breathable. Silky tricot liners allow the inner and outer layers to move and slide independently across your body.

Even the zippers get in on the act when it comes to Sun Mountain’s RainFlex line: they help keep things waterproof. All seams are sealed with flexible tape, and every fabric panel is cut for performance, every detail contributing to function. In fact, the RainFlex tops and bottoms are quiet and comfortable – no squeaking in these pants when your partner is trying to putt. Don’t you hate when that happens?

RainFlex gear boasts twice the minimum waterproof standard, and is guaranteed waterproof for two years from date of purchase.

The good folks at Sun Mountain understand golf. They know it’s a demanding sport, demanding functional yet fashionable garments. With the RainFlex line of apparel, Sun Mountain stands on top of the mountain – two thumbs up for some of the industry’s best outerwear. Heck, this stuff protects you so well, even a sideways rain at Carnoustie wouldn’t penetrate your shield.
