Equipment Review: Sonartec MD Transition Club, by Jeffrey Reed
Read any golf publication which ranks hybrids, and you’ll most likely come across a review of Sonartec’s MD Transition Club. When Todd Hamilton used the Sonartec hybrid to chip onto the green during his 2004 British Open victory, the club was instantly elevated from cult status to mainstream. I’ve used a 19-degree model, replacing my 2-iron (and 5-wood) for more than a year now, and next to my gap wedge, it’s my favourite club.
I recently added the 21-degree Sonartec MD hybrid to my bag, and saw instant results. Designed to replace a 3-iron or 7-wood, the 21-degree model is almost as long as the 19-degree MD, but gets the ball in the air a whole lot easier, and lands it just as softly. The only knock I’ve ever read about the Sonartec MD has been, it’s not for high-handicap golfers, and I agree in terms of the 19-degree model (as well as the 15- and 17-degree MDs). If those clubs were automobiles, they would be Lamborghinis: great clubs, not for novice golfers.
I’ve used the 19-degree MD off the tee on par-4s and long par-3s, out of a fairway bunker, from the fairway on par-5s, and even chipping from the fringe. The 21-degree model features the same Sonartec patented Driving Cavity Technology that is famous for its deep, penetrating ball flight and top-notch control. I strongly recommend the 21-degree MD for any level of golfer. In fact, Sonartec makes a 23- and 25-degree MD, too, replacing harder-to-hit 4- and 5-irons.
Sonartec fairway woods are in my bag, too, and for good reason. The Driving Cavity Technology is a hit. Raised CG really does create a penetrating ball flight that cuts through wind and finds your target. This technology, in my opinion, helps create the best hybrids and fairway woods on the market, in terms of total performance: distance; accuracy; and versatility.
The Sonartec MD Transition Club comes with a high-end custom UST iRoD shaft.
