Equipment Review: RedEye Golf Laser Putting System
by Jeffrey Reed
Finally, there’s a golf practice aid that doubles as a quality regulation piece of equipment. Enter RedEye Golf Company’s i330 Laser Putting System.
That’s right: laser. In fact, the i330 system doesn’t pale in comparison to Al Czervik’s electromagnetic sensor-equipped putter in Caddyshack (not that Dangerfield’s putter would be USGA-approved). The i330 putter, though, is a USGA-conforming flat stick. And, it’s one of the best indoor/outdoor practice aids to cross our test desk here at London Ontario Golf.
The i330 system is simple but it works to a tee, and the South Bend, Indiana-based RedEye company got everything right with the design. The putter itself is a classic mallet putter with offset hosel – the easiest and most accurate putter on the market, according to numerous industry tests. A laser cartridge in the face emits a laser line on the surface to show you exactly where your putter is aimed. The RedEye automatically guides your set-up and eyeline with a flawless straight line.
The second part of this smart system is the Electronic Smart Target, featuring a laser sensory system. When you align your putter, the Smart Target detects the laser beam of the i330 putter, and alerts you of proper alignment by beeping. Perfect alignment draws a constant tone. Approximately the size of a small golf trophy, the Smart Target has a canopy to block sunlight. It requires 3 AAA batteries.
The science behind the RedEye i330 Laser Putter promotes muscle memory – a key practice aid provision. Simply tap the bottom of the putter to activate the laser beam, observe the laser line which extends to the target, and putt. Company tests show by practicing with this muscle-memory method, a 630 per cent increase in putting accuracy resulted.
The RedEye putter is a solid piece of stand-alone equipment, too. Available in 33-in., 34-in. and 35-in. shaft lengths, it features a pistol-style Karakal grip, similar to the popular Winn models. The interchangeable cartridges allow for a swap from practice to playing mode which conforms with USGA regulations. Percussion mass weighting puts the majority of weight behind the centre of the club face, and there’s a 2-in. wide sweet spot. I like the smooth-milled flat face with burrs and ridges for true roll. And when you’re practicing, a 2032 Lithium battery in the laser cartridge will last a minimum of 150 activations.
A number of PGA Tour players, including Champions Tour competitor Craig Stadler, and Canada’s own Jim Nelford, endorse the RedEye Golf Laser Putting System. It retails for five payments of $35.95 US. For more information on this solid practice and playing partner, visit www.redeyegolf.com.
