Equipment Review: Pinfire Golf Putters, by Jeffrey Reed
The Pinfire Golf website heralds its team as “golfers, designers, engineers, researchers, strategists, technologists.” Give the Corona, California-based company’s putters a try, and you won’t argue with that bold statement. In fact, you would be hard pressed not to add, “visionaries,” to that impressive mix.
Pinfire putters are designed for the highest MOI which avoids twisting when the ball is struck off centre. Aerospace materials are used, and precise CNC milling to exact tolerances and specifications is evident in each of the company’s flatsticks. Pinfire putters look great, feel solid yet smooth, and promote the biggest plus any putter can boast in today’s market: they are designed to prevent jumping or skipping of the ball at impact.
There are currently nine Pinfire putters available. I tested The Freedom DB, a medium-sized mallet with adjustable weights and double bent shaft; and The Eagle, Pinfire’s most popular putter design featuring a large, two-ball type of head and double bent shaft. Both are excellent performers, but my favourite is The Freedom DB.
Available in blue, black, silver, red and gold, The Freedom DB boasts CNC milled 6061 aluminum, and weighs from 320 g to 360 g via its standard weight kit, including aluminum and brass weights. There’s an optional 400 g tungsten weight kit available, too. Offering a True Temper shaft of 33 to 36 in., and Winn grip, The Freedom DB can be adjusted to fit your swing. The pill rolls off the face softly but with authority, offering confidence on the greens. A topline marker offers additional alignment aid.
The Freedom DB, also available as The Freedom CS centre shafted model, is solid in my books. Putters are a personal part of any golfer’s arsenal, but this one’s a winner. If you like mallet putters, I suggest you give this one a try.
I’m not a huge fan of oversized, two-ball putters but most of the golfing world is, so who am I to argue? I wisely recognize their benefits, so without hesitation I also give a thumbs up to the Pinfire Eagle DB. Boasting a six-dimension sighting system, balanced weighting and CNC milling, The Eagle is labeled the “perfect putter” by Pinfire. It’s available in black, silver, copper, red and blue. Weighing in at 390 g, The Eagle DB has a large surface area which promotes a stable swing through the putting line. The CG is enormous, virtually eliminating backspin. If you like large, two-ball types, you’ll like The Eagle.
In total, there are nine Pinfire putter models available. Visit www.pinfiregolf.com to find your perfect Pinfire putter.
