Accessory Review: OGIO Mammoth Golf Travel Bag
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com
Question: what’s 50-in. tall, glides forward, back, left and right, and has more gadgets than a life-size Swiss Army knife? Answer: OGIO’s new golf travel bag, the aptly-named Mammoth.
There’s a reason OGIO is the Official Golf Gear Bag of London Ontario Golf. Quite simply, OGIO designs gear bags like no other company. In the past, we’ve raved about bags including the Atlas golf bag, and the Shoester. Add the Mammoth to the mix. It’s the most versatile, stylish, easy-to-operate bag you’ll ever come across, and it comes with OGIO’s famous lifetime warranty.
“Every golfer knows the pain of tipping a travel bag on two wheels and dragging it while also trying to balance gear, luggage and a briefcase,” says OGIO National Golf Sales Manager, Tom Gocke. “The Mammoth is awesome in that it moves wherever you move and stays upright the whole time. It’s a sweet experience – just push your bag the direction you want to go, and walk. It might be the easiest travel experience anyone has had in years.”
When the Mammoth arrived at our doorstep, we first thanked the courier for lugging the large package to our office, then eagerly unwrapped this behemoth of a bag. But don’t let the size fool you: the Mammoth is a gentle giant. It’s a sturdy travel companion, stands upright courtesy of its flexible yet rigid construction, and glides effortlessly thanks to four swivelling wheels. The oversized wheels providing tilted roll are a fantastic feature.
Armed with multiple grab handles, an oversized fully-padded top and compartment for extra protection around the club heads, the Mammoth is no Wooly Mammoth. Rather, it’s a state-of-the-art golf travel bag designed to protect your clubs, and get you to and from your destination without any hassles. The wide mouth of this 50-in. bag opens and unzips the full length of the bag. Clubs stay put with the aid of internal compression straps, plus two additional straps on the bag’s exterior.
OGIO spared nothing in the ingenuity department when designing the Mammoth. There’s a removable shoe pocket with carry handle, additional built-in shoe pocket, four exterior pockets to house rain gear or other last-second check-in items, and (one of my favourite features) an oversized crush-resistant hat pocket.
The oversized, fully-padded top compartment are sure to keep your clubs safe and stable. And the SLED (Structural Load Equalizing Deck) located at the bag’s base adds reinforcement for the bag’s already durable structure.
The Mammoth is made of durable dobby nylon and polyester, and weighs 18 lbs. unloaded. Carrying a MSRP of $330 US – and a lifetime warranty – the Mammoth truly is the giant amongst golf gear bags.
