Equipment Review:
Nicklaus Golf Dual Point 460 Driver
by Jeffrey Reed
It’s great to see a premium driver once again from Nicklaus Golf. And with the square drivers all the rage this season, it’s also nice to see Nicklaus Golf offer a more traditional driver that still gets the job done off the tee.
Not that the Nicklaus Golf Dual Point 460 Driver is small by any means. The 460cc head still packs plenty of punch. But it’s the design and the materials used which make this driver one of the best new clubs for 2007.
The moment I gripped this club, I fell in love with it. It’s my kind of driver. Jack’s designers have come up with a real beauty. A four-piece forged titanium clubhead utilizes a weight-saving micro-welding process, plus a 14 g weight plug to place the all-important centre of gravity in line with the maximum flex point on the face. This offers a trampoline effect – one of the best of any driver tested here at London Ontario Golf. This beast goes long – very long. It produces a high launch, but not too high so that the ball balloons. There’s still plenty of workability available with this driver.
I tested the 9 degree driver with a Fujikura SG Pro 3.01 shaft, stiff flex. There are custom shaft choices, too. Lofts of 8, 9, 10.5 and 12 degrees in right-handed versions, 9 and 10.5 degrees for lefties, and three offset lofts of 10.5, 12 and 15 degrees provide plenty of choices for low-handicappers and novice golfers alike. I even like the colours of the club sole – black, silver and bronze. It’s a modern driver with traditional looks.
With a MSRP of $300 US, the Nicklaus Golf Dual Point 460 driver is a highlight of this year’s new equipment offerings. It’s a forgiving club which doesn’t ignore the better player’s demands. The real key is the low-and-deep placing of weight for power and confidence off the tee.
I highly recommend the Nicklaus Golf Dual Point 460 driver. It ranks amongst the top drivers we have ever tested at London Ontario Golf. And, it won’t break the bank. Dollar for dollar, this could be 2007's top driver. For more information, visit
