Accessory Review:
Leupold GX-2 Rangefinder
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com
Confession time: I am no longer a feel golfer, thanks to the quality and ease-of-use of today's high-tech rangefinders. Proving good things come in small packages, the Leupold GX-2 rangefinder has found a new fan in this golfer, and here's why.
Weighing in at just 6.8 oz and measuring 4 in. x 2.75 in. x 1.5 in., the GX-2 boasts a tough ruggedized plastic shell and a crystal-clear LCD display. With a maximum range - reflective target/prism - of 750 yards, and maximum range - pin - of 350 yards, there's no more guessing in golf.
I've used a rangefinder now for three seasons, and the Leupold GX-2 is the best I've put in my bag. It's why we awarded the GX-2 our Best Rangefinder as part of our 2010 Golf Gear Awards.
A weatherproof rangefinder, the GX-2 offers a Quick Set Menu for fast access to high performance on the fairways. In Scan Mode, the GX-2 provides multiple readings - just hold down the power button for line-of-site measurements. And get this: when you're playing at a club which uses prism technology, the GX-2 will pick up the prism-topped flag stick and beep to alert you of an accurate reading.
I like the GX-2's Fog Mode, which allows the unit to cut through bad weather for fast, accurate readings. The GX-2's optical system uses precision glass, cutting-edge coating technology and rugged structural components. The result? Bright, clear optics, accurate ranging, low glare and scratch resistance.
Other rangefinders have issues when ranging a pin or fluttering flag over 300 yards away, but not the GX-2. It has been calibrated to fire a laser beam exactly at the target in the crosshairs. Advanced GX software separates returns from objects in the background. The GX-2 Club Selector automatically recommends club selection, too - it's like having a caddie in the palm of your hand. As well, the GX-2 True Golf Range (TGR) feature uses sophisticated software plus temperature and altitude inputs to tell you how far to play your shot.
With features like these, it's no surprise the Leupold GX-2 rangefinder was named our best of 2010. I've recorded my best score to-date at London Hunt and Country Club using the GX-2, and have played solidly at my home course, The Fox Golf Club, thanks to the Leupold GX-2.
Time to try a new rangefinder? The Leupold GX-2 (MSRP $500US) retails as low as $399US. It's well worth the money. In fact, the GX-2 is truly like having a caddie in the palm of your hand.
