Equipment Review: KZG GF 4 Driver, by Jeffrey Reed
How do you follow up on one of the hottest 460cc drivers on today’s market? If you’re North Hollywood, Calif.-based KZG, you do it by proving good things do, indeed, come in smaller packages. Case in point: KZG’s new GF 4 driver.
Following in the footsteps of the highly-successful 460cc Gemini driver, the GF 4 features a smaller 425cc head, but with a twist. The GF 4 uses what KZG calls Gravitational Force (GF) Technology – the use of its innovative screw system. It’s cast in 6-4 beta titanium, and features an expanded hitting area from heel to toe for extra forgiveness.
Utilizing four strategically positioned weight ports, and a selection of screws available in seven unique weights, this innovative driver allows for the adjustment of swing weight, launch angle and draw/fade bias. In fact, KZG’s selected weight measurements of 1.5-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-gram adjustable screws add up to 2,401 different weight options – almost double the amount permitted by TaylorMade’s highly-popular 425cc r7 driver. Now that’s custom fitting!
In fact, custom fitting is at the core of KZG’s company philosophy. The company continues to stress the importance of club adjustments resting in the hands of a professional club fitter. Says KZG president Jennifer King, “When you consider that engineers spend months manipulating a club’s centre of gravity to achieve a desired launch condition, it seems irresponsible to encourage the uninformed golfer to experiment. But, in the hands of professional club fitters who really know what they’re doing, the GF 4 is a dream club.”
London-area authorized KZG fitters include The Bluffs of Port Stanley Golf Club, and The Village Green Golf Range and Practice Centre in Stoney Point.
In the GF 4 driver, KZG promises a lot – and rightfully so. As a current user of the Gemini driver, I would have no problem replacing it with the 425cc GF 4. After one test drive at the range, and a round at my home club, the GF 4 produced big-time. My GF 4 was fit by KZG with a neutral bias, and is fit with a Grafalloy Blue stiff shaft. I find it a little easier to draw or fade the ball with this club versus the larger Gemini, but the ball still explodes off the face, and with more of a penetrating ball flight. You can certainly dial long distance with the GF 4, too.
Even if you’re a high-handicapper, the GF 4 will still offer you plenty of forgiveness despite its 425cc head, which KZG has designed with maximum forgiveness in mind. Even if you find the club head too small for your liking (and let’s be honest, 425cc is not small), the myriad of custom fitting options more than make up for a slightly smaller head.
In my books, KZG has done extremely well with their follow-up driver. The MSRP for KZG’s GF 4 is $439 US steel shaft, $469 graphite (with shaft options). For more information on the GF 4 driver, as well as a full catalogue of products from KZG, visit the company website at www.kzgolf.com.
