Equipment Review: Knife Wedge from La Jolla Club Golf Company, by Jeffrey Reed
One of the nicest feeling clubs tested during the 2005 season, the new Knife wedge from Vista, California-based La Jolla Club Golf Company is a winner. Featuring the same patented three-blade technology as the Knife fairway woods, hybrids and irons, the Knife wedge cuts through rough like a hot knife through butter. And, it promotes soft landings, too.
Despite its uniqueness, the shallow three-blade design wrapped around the back and sole does not make this club a gimmicky wedge. In fact, the shallow three-blade technology is complemented with a classic profile and thin top line. Exceptional playability and accuracy around the greens were the order of the day when using this new club – I played the 52-degree gab wedge. It’s also available in right-handed sand and lob styles of 56- and 60-degrees.
Here’s how easy it was to adjust to this new club: normally, I play a 50-degree gap wedge with tungsten weight pads positioned high in the back of the club head, which raise the centre of gravity for a lower trajectory. The Knife wedge, with a tungsten ring back weight, provides a low/back centre of gravity for higher trajectory. Yet, hitting out of the rough and from greenside was a pleasure with the Knife wedge. The ball chewed the green, and felt solid off the face thanks to a vibration absorption ring on the back of the club.
The Knife wedge has a heavy feel, but isn’t a burden out of the bag. Rather, it added confidence to my round. Carrying a MSRP of $59.99 US, this club is an affordable weapon which I believe will help improve your short game.
