Equipment Review: IZZO Golf Zwood, by Jeffrey Reed

IZZO Golf is best known for its golf training aids, and golf bags featuring the patented Dual Strap System – but perhaps not for long. IZZO introduces, the Zwood, the latest wood hybrid to enter the market, and one of the most versatile.

Available as easy-to-hit 2-, 4-, 6-, 8- and 10-wood models, the Zwood is designed with a lightweight carbon matrix crown that allows weight to be moved low and back, creating added forgiveness and accuracy without sacrificing distance. In fact, the Zwood resembles and feels like an oversized hybrid – versatile, long, and promoting a high ball flight.

I tested the 275cc Zwood 2, with 12.5 degrees of loft. Whomever designed this club knows golf. Tungsten weighting from the sole elevates and straightens the ball flight for pinpoint accuracy, and toe-heel weighting promotes automatic correction of hooks and slices. The key to success with this club is to swing easy and let the club’s loft and design do its job. Amongst many of the clubs on today’s market, I found the Zwood 2 to be one of the easiest to hit – it lines up automatically, and gets the ball in the air quickly, while landing it softly. The real key, I think, is the distribution of weight. As I’ve written, the designer of this club deserves accolades.

The Zwood 2 comes with an IZZO high-performance, custom-tuned graphite shaft which performed admirably. You’ll find this shaft in each of the Zwood models, including: the 190cc 16-degree 4-wood; 180cc 20-degree 6-wood; 170cc 24-degree 8-wood; and 160cc 28-degree 10-wood.

Swing the IZZO Zwood with a sweeping motion, and you’re sure to find success. For more information on this new club, visit www.izzo.com.
