Equipment Review: F2 Wedge, by Jeffrey Reed

Despite the fact the F2 Wedge was highly visible through infomercials on The Golf Channel, I still wasn’t prepared for its unconventional design when it arrived at my door. In fact, even when I brought it out to the practice range, the F2 Wedge didn’t magically cure all of my wedge problems with its hosel-back design. But it did generate some buzz at the range, and I do believe it can help a beginner to get the ball in the air a little easier than a conventional club.

F2 stands for Face Forward technology. Quite simply, the face is forward and the hosel is back on this club, enabling the ball to strike and leave the clubface before grass or sand can grab the hosel and twist the clubface. I hit the 56-degree wedge – 52- and 60-degree lofts are available, too, as well as the new 58-degree model with 14 degrees of bounce and 20-per-cent larger clubface. Compared to my trusty gap wedge, I didn’t find any more balls landing in the scoring zone, but I did see the merits of this club for those prone to shanking the ‘ole pill. And I found the F2 wedge particularly helpful in escaping a steep bunker.

No club can completely eliminate a chili dipper, but the F2 wedge ($99.99 US), through its innovative design, does eliminate the basic problem of shanking the ball. Consider it a wedge with training wheels. You’ll certainly stand out using the F2 Wedge, and you may find it helps your game, too.
