Equipment Review:
Excel Golf
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com
There’s a reason why I play the Zero Friction Tee from Excel Golf. Last year, I posted a 60 at my local club, and at age 47 I am hitting the ball further and straighter than I ever have in my life.
The Zero Friction tee burst onto the golf scene in 2005, the charter year of London Ontario Golf. Now, the Zero Friction tee is the Official Golf Tee of London Ontario Golf. This month, we take a look at a few products from Excel Golf.
Zero Friction Wood Tees
Typically, I play the original Zero Friction Performance Tees, 2 ¾ in. with the Big Dog and 1 ¾ in. with fairway metals, hybrids and irons. Excel Golf now offers Zero Friction Wood Tees. These boast the same three-prong design for less friction and more distance. Like the original Performance Tees, the Wood Tees reduce the contact area with the ball by 66 per cent. They’re available in 2 ¾ in. and 3 ¼ in. and provide an ideal solution for traditional clubs looking to make a technological change.
I tested the Wood Tees and found them to play significantly longer and straighter than traditional wood tees. Again, the three-prong design is king.
Zero Friction Lock N Drive
Designed for the golfer who wants a consistent tee height no matter what club he or she is hitting, the Zero Friction Lock N Drive system boasts six settings along the shaft. The tee is adjusted with a stopper which doubles as a ball marker. These tees also boast the three-prong design. They’re available in 2 ¾ in. and 3 ¼ in. sizes.
I tried the Zero Friction Lock N Drive system during a long session at the range, and found merit with its design. No more guessing: the Lock N Drive system really does offer consistency in tee height – ideal for beginners and aces alike.
Zero Friction e-Tee
The e-Tee is the newest eco-friendly golf tee. It’s traditional in design, but 100 per cent bio-composite, as is the original Zero Friction Performance Tee. Sizes are 2 ¾ in. and 3 ¼ in.
Zero Friction Distance 312 Golf Balls
Distance balls offer just that: long bombs. But I was pleasantly surprised by the greenside feel offered by the Zero Friction Distance 312 golf ball. A two-piece ball with 312 dimple pattern, the ZF Distance 312 allows for maximum distance, roll – and soft feel. The ball is made from 100 per cent renewable resources with no toxic synthetic materials used in the process.
Excel Golf says its ZF Distance 312 ball travels “up to five yards longer than the competition.” I played nine holes with this ball, and I have to tell you, it is insanely long. I did find it to be harder than my premium four-piece Tour ball, but it wasn’t rock hard, either. Mid-iron and chip shots did see some loss in feel, but again it wasn’t a significant loss – not a loss most amateur golfers would notice.
Two thumbs up for Excel Golf’s new products. Visit their web site, www.excelgolfproducts.com for more information.
