Equipment Review: Evolve Golf Epoch Tee
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com
The technology behind many of today’s new golf tees isn’t rocket science. But, in the case of Evolve Golf’s Epoch tee, you may find your ball explodes like a rocket when teed up on one of these babies. OK, so you’ll need a few more lessons before you’re smashing the ball like Bubba Watson or J.B. Holmes. But the Epoch golf tee is a step in the right direction.
Developed in late-2003 and launched at the 2004 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, the Epoch tee works on the premise that less is more – that is, less contact with the ball, more distance and accuracy. With four small contact points, resembling a Swiss Army cross, the Epoch tee boasts radius posts that span the width of the golf ball dimple. This creates less friction, eliminates deflection at impact and increases ball speed.
I like the stability of this tee – it produced a sense of confidence at the range where I tested the 1.5-in. hybrid tee, and 2 ¾-in. plus 3 ¼-in. driver tees. Robotic and player tests of the Evolve Golf Epoch tee have concluded this tee can add up to 12 yards distance and nine yards accuracy.
I did notice extra distance, not to mention consistent accuracy with every club – minus the putter, of course. But here’s betting if Holmes and Watson hit putter off one of the Epoch tees, they would be happy with the results.
The Epoch tee, like all of Evolve Golf products, is completely sustainable. Made entirely from recycled and renewable materials, the mower-friendly design lasts 10 times longer than a wooden tee. After scores of ball testing, both the driver and hybrid tees I tested emerged unscathed.
Two thumbs up to Evolve Golf’s Epoch tee. Not convinced? Then consider the fact, the Epoch tee was used by four Top-10 finishers at the 2008 U.S. Open. In total, it has helped gather 105 wins on the PGA, LPGA, Nationwide and Champions tours – and counting.
