Equipment Review:
Bob Burns Roll-In Putter, +/- Custom Ground Wedges
by Jeffrey Reed, Editor, LondonOntarioGolf.com
When the folks at Bob Burns Golf contacted us about reviewing two of their latest products, we jumped at the opportunity. After all, Bob Burns Golf has a well-earned reputation as a David amongst the Goliaths of the golf industry.
Bob Burns Golf didn’t disappoint. This month, we review the company’s Roll-In Putter; and the +/- Custom Ground Wedges.
Roll-In Putter
One of the fastest-growing trends in golf amongst both professionals and amateurs is the inclusion of a mallet putter to one’s game. Bob Burns Golf does it right with its Roll-In Putter which, with a package base price of $125 US, is a steal.
If you don’t like the look of a club, you’re behind the eight ball even before you hit that first tee shot. The Roll-In Putter from Bob Burns Golf is a beauty. With its 345 g, computer-milled aluminum head and extended mallet shape, the Roll-In Putter features not only a T-shaped sightline, but also a lightweight material that transfers energy to the ball at a consistent rate. Both Moment of Inertia (MOI) and CG are in synch, making tap-ins and lag putts a breeze.
The Roll-In Putter features no fewer than seven weight portals and adjustable screws of varying masses, offering true customization. The weights serve four functions. They offer a basic three-point stability system, with a dense tungsten screw in both the heel and toe, and two back weights equidistant from the centre line. The result is an enlarged sweet spot. The fully weighted clubhead maximizes the MOI. You can also adjust the weights of the clubhead to compensate for the speed of the greens on which you are playing. If you tend to push or pull your putts, you can also bias the weight towards the heel or the toe to correct your problem.
In addition to the standard weight screws, there are screws from 2 g to 10 g available for even further customization.
I like the feel of the ball coming off the face of this club – medium in feel and producing a true roll soon after impact.
Bob Burns Golf offers the same Roll-In Putter with the BigLite Grip, weighing in at a whopping 85 g and measuring about 250 per cent larger than a traditional grip. I tested the Roll-In Putter with both a standard Winn Grips midsize pistol grip, and the BigLite Grip. There’s something to this BigLite version, which aims to take the hands out of the equation and eliminate (dare I say it?) the dreaded yips.
If you’re looking for a top-notch mallet putter but don’t want to take out a second mortgage, then I suggest you try the Roll-In Putter.
+/- Custom Ground Wedges
Without a good wedge game, you may as well trade in your golf clubs for lawn darts or horseshoes. Wedges are all about feel – and feeling confident you’re going to hit that pill into the scoring zone on a consistent basis.
In the Bob Burns Golf +/- Custom Ground Wedges, you’ll discover an unconventional yet dependable playing partner. I must admit, at first glance the face of these wedges threw me for a loop, thanks to their non-traditional face pattern. But after pitching and chipping with this club at the range, I walked away a big fan.
I tested a 52° gap wedge with 10° of bounce, and a 60° lob wedge with 12° of bounce, both matched with a True Temper shaft. Both clubs performed admirably, whether hitting a low runner or a high pitch.
When you order your +/- Custom Ground Wedge from Bob Burns Golf, you can choose your own design and specifications. The company’s master craftsmen can custom grind your clubs to almost any specification, from the shape of the toe to the bounce, heel-relief, lie angle, camber, type of finish (the Raw finish is outstanding), and even stamping colour.
Two full years in development, the +/- Wedge System is 100 per cent ground to fit your game. And carrying a package base price of $119, you cannot go wrong with these clubs.
Headquartered just north of Appleton, Wisconsin, Bob Burns Golf is a family-owned and operated business founded in 1975 by PGA Master Professional and recognized teacher of the game, Bob Burns.
