Review: Alias Footwear, by Jeffrey Reed

If you’re looking for comfortable, stylish golf shoes like no others, then look no further than Santa Cruz, Calif.-based Alias Footwear. Company founder and president Dale Morrow did his research when designing these shoes: he golfed with a crowd more often sited on dirt bikes, surf boards, skateboards and snowboards – hardcore folks who rode for a living. Yet, these same folks offered input when Morrow wanted to offer an alternative golf shoe.

The result: “Comfort to the Tee,” Alias Footwear’s slogan. With roots stemming from the surf, skate and snowboard markets, Alias produced a comfortable, non-traditional looking golf shoe boasting ultra breathability, light weight, and the ability to fit a wide foot.

First presented to the market at the 2004 PGA Merchandise Show, Alias Footwear has recently launched three new golf shoe styles: the Sedan; the Slope; and the Coupe. I recently wore a pair of the Coupe 1108 golf shoes, and was immediately impressed with their comfort. I don’t have a wide foot, but I do have special needs when it comes to footwear. The Coupe 1108 shoes are most definitely comfortable.

In the Coupe 1108, Alias Footwear has produced a sturdy yet breathable shoe for the links – the most breathable of the company’s three offerings. A sandwich poly-mesh toe, panels with Nubuck, make it lightweight and flexible. A lycra four-way stretch tongue with thick porous insulation produce stylish breathability. The textured PVC toe cap ensures durability, while heel-tongue pull-cord loops accommodate easy slip on at the course. A removable insert with latex heel cushion topped with poly cotton mesh delivers plush comfort. And, the Coupe 1108 shoes are easy to clean with a damp cloth.

The Coupe 1108 golf shoe, with metal thread cleat system, is available in grey, black, navy and khaki, and retails for $70 US. I strongly recommend it for the casual Generation X golfer looking for comfort and style.
