Equipment Review: Adams Golf New Idea a2 Hybrids, by Jeffrey Reed

Since its founding in 1987, Adams Golf has been an industry leader in the design and development of hybrid irons. Listen, when golf legend Tom Watson is pitching your clubs, you know there’s a method to your magic. And that’s exactly what the new Idea a2, and new Idea a2 OS hybrid sets are: magic. Boasting ultimate forgiveness, distance, accuracy, and polished design, the new Idea hybrid iron sets are picture perfect performers.

Everyone knows a hybrid club combines the distance of a fairway wood with the control and accuracy of an iron. Adams Golf has designed a club with a low profile, low centre of gravity, and low-spinning performance for long, forgiving, easy-to-hit alternatives to long irons. In comparison to conventional irons, the new Idea a2 and a2 OS hybrids have a centre of gravity that is 11-per-cent lower and 2.5 times deeper; and MOI that is 30-per-cent more forgiving. Without a doubt, these are some of the easiest-to-hit iron-hybrid combos I’ve ever had in my hands, and some of the sharpest looking sticks ever manufactured.

The folks at Adams forwarded a sampling of the Idea a2 model, Tour designed and shape preferred by Tour professionals. In fact, they’re played on the PGA, Nationwide and Champions tours, thanks to ideal launch conditions and playability for mid to high swing speeds. I played the Aldila NV graphite shafts with stiff flex – they’re also available in True Temper Dynalite steel. My hybrids include a 20-degree 3-iron iWood hybrid, and a 23-degree 4-iron iWood hybrid. Irons 5 through PW all feature a very wide sole for ultimate forgiveness, yet they’re not too wide so that they distract you from accurate shotmaking: you still feel like a player with these clubs on your side. A deep muscle-back design which blends into a cavity back and deep sole gets the ball in the air and lands it softly. Plus, a deep groove design makes spinning the ball an easy task.

The Idea a2 set also offers a 16-degree iWood and 18-degree iWood for further hybrid options. Every one of these clubs is a winner.

The a2 OS game improvement design are manufactured to be "the easiest to hit hybrids in golf," according to Adams Golf. A generous offset design, and low and back cavity back make them easy to get in the air and turn over. Shaft options include Graffaloy Pro Launch; Aldila NVS for senior golfers; and women’s Aldila shafts. Men’s lofts include 17-, 19-, and 23-degree iWood hybrids, and a 5-iron- and 6-iron-like hybrid. Senior lofts include 19-, 23- and 26-degree iWood clubs, and a 29-degree 6-iron substitute. The women’s Idea a2 OS lofts include 23- and 26-degree iWoods, plus a 29-degree 6-iron-like hybrid.

Even the top PGA Tour pros are playing hybrids – not to mention 460cc drivers. You should, too. Get up to speed on Adams Golf new Idea a2 and Idea a2 OS hybrids at www.adamsgolf.com.
