What’s New in Golf Equipment, Apparel & Accessories 2006

Well
before the Masters Tournament signals
the unofficial beginning of the
southwestern Ontario golf season,
those of us crazy about the game spend
months dreaming of purchasing that new
driver, set of irons or those
high-performance shoes. The golf
equipment industry is a
multi-billion-dollar business, fueled
by technology that as of late has
changed quicker than a downhill putt
on Sunday at Augusta National. No
longer does spring mark the unveiling
of all new gear, apparel and
accessories. In fact, technology
advances so quickly that new products
are introduced throughout the calendar
year. The PGA Merchandise Show &
Convention does act as the main
vehicle and timing (late-January) for
new golf clubs, but it seems like new
product offerings are unleashed on a
daily basis.
Here in London, Ont., a city
boasting a population of 348,000,
golfers will spend close to $25
million this year alone on green fees,
memberships and new clubs. They’ll
spend millions more on attire and
accessories. Where do you purchase
your golf apparel? A 2005 Golf World
Omnibus Study revealed the following
market trends: 40 per cent purchase
apparel on-course; 13 per cent
off-course; 11 per cent at department
stores; 10 per cent online; 2 per cent
at discount stores; just 2 per cent at
sporting goods stores (that number is
surprising); and 22 per cent at other
venues.
This year at London Ontario Golf,
we’re including a selection of golf
apparel and accessories to our annual,
What’s New in Golf Equipment story.
As far as clubs go, take your pick.
Everything from the Nike 460cc
SasQuatch driver, to the HX Tour 56
golf ball has changed the face of the
game. Last year, hybrids grabbed much
of the spotlight. This year’s hot
products: putters with adjustable
weight systems; Tour-groove wedges;
high-tech shafts; and yes, a myriad of
hybrids. And let’s not forget custom
fitting, critical to any golfer’s
handicap.
In fact, there isn’t any club that
has escaped a metamorphosis in 2006.
Here, then, is What’s New in Golf
Equipment – and Apparel and
Accessories – for the 2006 season.
Enjoy.

finishing system to keep balls whiter,
brighter, and more scuff-resistant.
Both balls boast innovative hexagonal
dimple pattern designed to improve
aerodynamics. Here’s the difference.

thicker cover has extra spin and
softer feel around the greens while
still traveling Tour-level distance. Big Bertha golf ball ($35) combines distance of Big Bertha Red and
