Sonic Golf System-1

The World Golf Hall of Fame has included Sonic Golf’s System-1 as a prominent part of an exhibit commemorating Vijay Singh’s 2008 Fed Ex Cup victory.

Singh first started using Sonic Golf’s System-1 at the Stanford St. Jude Championship in early June 2008. The system was fully incorporated into his training routine by the time of the Travelers Championship in late June. Over the intervening weeks he used this technology daily to fine tune his tempo, rhythm, and timing. Not having won in the previous 17 months, Vijay won four of his last eight PGA tour events, including the World Golf Championships — Bridgestone Invitational, The Barclays, The Deutsche Bank Championship , and Chevron World Challenge. He won the 2008 Fed Ex Cup and finished #1 on the 2008 PGA Tour Money list.

When asked about the Sonic Golf’s System-1 at the press conference after his Deutsche Bank Championship victory, Singh said, “I think it's helped me tremendously. I always had a good rhythm, but I never had a consistent rhythm. That's making my swing a lot more consistent, not just with the driver but the whole game. It's one rhythm for the whole game instead of having a quicker rhythm for irons or slower rhythm for the driver. It's just making me so much more consistent. I think it's going to be one of the best teaching devices ever. It's a great tool.”

Sonic Golf System-1 comprises electronics which insert into the shaft of the golf club. These electronics measure the speed of the club in real-time and communicate the data wirelessly to a receiver, worn by the golfer and observers. This receiver converts the data into a real-time, audio soundscape which provides an acoustic representation of the golf swing. The orchestrated sound is low pitched and soft when the club is moving slowly, scaling to high pitched and loud when the club moves quickly, providing a robust means of understanding and training tempo, rhythm, and timing in the golf swing.

According to Sonic Golf founder Robert Grober, “Of the several tour players who have adopted Sonic Golf System-1, Vijay is the player who has most incorporated it into his practice routine. Vijay now uses our technology so that he can listen to nearly every swing he makes on the practice range. The benefits to his tempo, rhythm, and timing have clearly reaped rewards in his game.”

Sonic Golf, Inc. designs, develops and manufactures electronic measurement systems which are incorporated into conventional golf clubs. The Sonic Golf vision is that modern sensor technologies can be incorporated into golf equipment to help people help themselves become better golfers.

Sonic Golf’s System-1 inserts into the shaft of most any golf club using a specialty golf grip developed and manufactured by Golf Pride. The Sonic Golf System-1 is based on technology invented and patented at Yale University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science and is licensed exclusively to Sonic Golf, Inc.
