Book Review by Jeffrey Reed:
The Search for the Perfect Golf Club
Author: Tom Wishon

Finally, the definitive book about proper club selection, from the master of clubhead and shaft design and analysis: The Search for the Perfect Golf Club, by Tom Wishon. A cornucopia of club information, this book should be part of every golfer’s arsenal, whether you are a weekend duffer or a seasoned pro. The reason? As Wishon explains, “I truly believe that all golfers, at all skill levels, need to have aspects of their golf clubs customized. These very real needs will not be met by buying standard, off-the-rack, clubs.”

Hands up if you have your suits tailor-made? Now hands up if you select a suit at Sears? Most of us buy clothing off the rack, and the majority of golfers buy clubs without proper clubfitting. Heck, if we buy a $500 suit off the rack, we’re apt to purchase a $500 driver without customization too, right? But as Wishon plainly explains in this fun yet educational book, you’ll maximize your game if you put the right clubs in your hands.

A 32-year veteran of the golf equipment industry, including extensive clubfitting and research and development, Wishon writes a book which every golfer can understand. There are 13 chapters, including detailed information on the clubhead, club lies, shafts, grips and lofts. There’s a neat chapter entitled, Ten Things You Can Do For Your Equipment For Under $25. For example, Wishon writes, grips are largely ignored when it comes to maintenance. In less than a half hour, you can revitalize the grips on an entire set – unless they are worn, of course, and need to replaced.

The meat of this book deals with putting the right clubs into the hands of the right golfer. After all, writes Wishon, there are 21 variables in a golf club, from loft angle to set makeup. If you’re going to attack those pins, you had better be armed with the right ammunition. Wishon’s book makes choosing the right weapons an easier chore.

Co-written with Tom Grundner, The Search for the Perfect Golf Club is well worth the suggested retail price of $32.95. You can read more about Wishon, and Tom Wishon Golf Technology at the consumer site www.twgolftech.com and clubmaker site www.wishongolf.com.
